Wreck

Self-expression

2023

This is personal work, no brief, no client, which is exactly why the lighting approach could be this uncompromising. The decision to sink almost the entire frame into black and isolate the wreck with a single hard source was about creating discomfort rather than atmosphere. It references the visual language of forensic or crime scene photography without being derivative of it, that quality of something being found, illuminated by necessity rather than intention. The motion blur woven through the structure is the more considered choice: it implies that the object is still in some residual state of violence, caught rather than at rest. The surviving blue of the bodywork against the dry grass and near-total darkness is the one moment of colour information in the frame, and it does a lot of emotional work without announcing itself.
